Our progress across the peninsula
Thank you to everyone across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who supports imaging services in the peninsula.
Here is a snapshot of our work and achievements to date:
1.58m imaging examinations, up 6% from the previous year.
1,219 staff working in imaging in the four trusts.
1,380 scans processed weekly through a shared AI CT chest tool for lung nodule detection.
£1.1m (est.) savings to the end of March 2026, compared with using outsourcing companies by our pioneering Shared Insourced Reporting Programme with 70 reporters now signed up.
£1.2m saved on PACS and RIS reprocurement, while adding cloud-based functionality to enhance image sharing and shared reporting.
£1.5m (est.) saved annually - compared with outsourcing - by Peninsula Radiology On-Call (PROC) with PenRAD operational management.
£6.8m additional funding secured for digital developments, including PACS/RIS, order comms, home reporting workstations, and specialist reporting software.
2,100+ students engaged from 78 schools and colleges, and 1,217 attended our career events.
11 modality forums and 7 regional groups, led by PenRAD, supporting and improving service delivery.

Other highlights...
- Implemented a network view of demand and activity, with a data sharing agreement and BI dashboard.
- Deployment of an AI CT chest tool, funded through the NHS AI Diagnostic Fund, led by PenRAD’s AI Sub-Group.
- Collaboration to ensure equitable access CT perfusion imaging across the peninsula for stroke thrombectomy.
- £300k funding secured to deliver a digital solution for the management of non-medical referrers.
- Collected data for the peninsula imaging productivity and efficiency (PIPE) project, checking CT, MRI and NOUS scans per hour.
- Enabled a fourth registrar to be added to the PROC rota, saving University Hospitals Plymouth £250k.
